    Leica Pegasus Stream. Ground penetrating radar for mobile mass data acquisition

    The Stream EM, together with the Leica Pegasus:Two, offers a solution that provides an integrated hardware platform for comprehensive 3D mapping of underground utilities and surface features in a single scan.

    This ground penetrating radar solution enables massive and mobile data collection of underground utilities thanks to the use of a large antenna array. While capturing calibrated imagery and point cloud data, the solution uses:

    • Laser scanner (or multiple scanners)
    • LiDAR technology
    • GNSS receiver
    • Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
    • Distance Measurement Instrument (DMI)
    • All on a mobile platform (vehicle), acquiring precise and accurate spatial data.

    The solution has been designed to cover tens of hectares per day, obtaining the best underground utility and surface surveys, while maintaining the same maximum data acquisition speed of 15 km/h.

    The combination of positioning data provided by the Leica Pegasus:Two with the complete 3D subsurface view provided by the IDS Stream EM allows highly accurate reconstruction of the geospatial coordinates of assets, regardless of variations in the scanning trajectory (which is not always straight) and elevation. This makes it possible to create a highly accurate map of underground assets with a resolution of just a few centimetres.

    The availability of complete knowledge of underground utilities enables better decision-making in the design of new installations. It also reduces the risk of unforeseen issues due to utilities or major anomalies such as sinkholes discovered during the construction phase.

    System features:

    • Can be towed by a vehicle at up to 15 km/h (9 mph) and can operate continuously without blocking traffic.
    • Accuracy up to 5 cm (2 inches): Stream provides precise geolocation of the inspected area and individually distinguishes all detected pipes, cables and anomalies.
    • Reduced costs and time: Can cover tens of hectares per day without blocking traffic.
    • Combines imagery and point cloud data in a single calibrated and intuitive platform.
    • Fully calibrated spherical view via an optional dome camera to enable city modelling.
    • Capture and edit 3D spatial objects from imagery or within the point cloud.
    • No need for dedicated or modified vehicles.
    • The software provides access to Esri® ArcGIS for Desktop.

    The benefits of Pegasus:Stream include:

    • Improved management of utility and surface mapping through a complete 3D model of underground and above-ground installations;
    • Accurate X-Y-Z positioning of underground assets in absolute geographic coordinates;
    • Reduced costs and time: Improves traditional GPR productivity by a factor of > 20; Facilitates large-scale surveys: The system can be manually towed or with a small vehicle, increasing acquisition speed (up to 6 km/h).
    • Increases accuracy with detection precision as low as 5 cm (2 inches);
    • Boosts productivity and detects all buried targets.
